Explore The Area

The General Tarleton is on the outskirts of the historic town of Knaresborough, and a mere 15 minute drive (or 8 minute train) into the stunning spa town of Harrogate. With plenty to see and do in the local area, here are a few things to help you plan your visit with us.

Walks & Landscapes

Pull on your boots and head straight out from our door. We’re surrounded by beautiful walks, from the peaceful trails at Staveley Nature Reserve, to the winding paths through Nidd Gorge and the Old Bilton Circular. A short drive brings you to the dramatic rock formations of Brimham Rocks, and the much-loved Fewston & Swinsty Reservoir loop. We’re also perfectly placed for two of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, just 30 mins from the sweeping Yorkshire Dales in one direction, and the dramatic landscapes of the North York Moors in the other.

Heritage & History

If you fancy stepping into Yorkshire’s past, there’s plenty to explore nearby. Wander through the dramatic ruins of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, one of the region’s most iconic landscapes, or discovery the grandeur of Ripley Castle and Castle Howard. Climb up to Knaresborough Castle for sweeping views across the review, uncover folklore legends surrounding Mother Shipton’s Cave (England’s oldest tourist attraction), or head further afield to the dramatic setting of Bolton Castle.

Activities

If you’re looking for something a little more active, there’s plenty nearby to keep you busy. Less than a mile down the road you’ll find Hazel Bank Shooting Ground, where you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, as well as Knaresborough Golf Club for a relaxed round. For something truly unique, spend time with the friendly crew at Nidderdale Llamas and head out on a gentle trek through the hills. For cyclists, there are several scenic routes nearby, from quiet country lanes to longer rides that take in reservoirs, villages and moorland views.

Wellness & Wind Down

You’re perfectly placed to slow things down and take it easy when staying with us. A trip into Harrogate is always a good idea, whether you’re heading for the beautiful Victorian Turkish Baths for a steam, or simply wandering the town with a coffee in hand.

Or head over to Pool Bridge Farm which offers cold water swimming alongside lakeside saunas. There are also several wild swimming spots within 45 minutes of the pub for those feeling adventurous.

If gentler pleasures are more your pace, take a boat ride along the river in Knaresborough (Blenkhorn’s and Marigolds both offer boat hire), wander the beautifully landscaped grounds of RHS Garden Harlow Carr, or settle in for a cake and cuppa at Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Big Events

Our county knows how to put on a proper day out, from world-famous agricultural shows, to literary festivals that draw visitors from across the country.

The much loved Great Yorkshire Show fills Harrogate each summer (14-16 July 2026) with the best of food, farming and countryside life, while race days at Ripon, Wetherby and Thirsk offer a brilliant atmosphere.

Knaresborough’s legendary Knaresborough Bed Race (13 June 2026) is a brilliantly bonkers tradition where teams race decorated beds through the streets.

For something a little different, the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival (23-26 July 2026) brings renowned authors and crime-fiction fans to town. Big weekends around here tend to book up quickly, so it’s always worth planning ahead.
